Keyboard & accessibility
Use documented keyboard controls and accessible interaction patterns.
Convography provides keyboard behavior for the composer, graph, menus, dialogs, and documentation. Graph traversal can update the selected chat path while keeping keyboard focus in the graph until you explicitly enter the chat pane.
Composer shortcuts#
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Enter | Send the current message |
| Shift+Enter | Insert a new line |
| Ctrl+Shift+Enter | Send behind without switching nodes |
| Escape | Dismiss an inline send-behind composer |
On a Mac, the Send behind implementation accepts the Command modifier in the same combined shortcut.
Documentation shortcuts#
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+K or Command+K | Open documentation search |
| / | Open search when focus is not in an input |
| Escape | Close search or mobile documentation navigation |
Graph access#
Opening a node moves focus into its chat pane. Press Alt+G (Option+G on macOS) from anywhere outside an open dialog to center and focus the selected graph node. If the selected node is not visible, the shortcut centers and focuses the conversation root. On mobile it opens the Graph view first. This starts graph-navigation mode: chat and route updates do not take focus from the destination node, and only Enter or Space hands focus into the chat pane. Graph nodes are excluded from the normal Tab sequence.
Once a graph node has focus, use:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Alt+G or Option+G | Center and focus the selected graph node, or the conversation root as a fallback |
| Tab or Shift+Tab | Stay on the current graph node; focus does not move |
| Arrow Up | Select the visible parent and update the chat pane; do nothing at a root |
| Arrow Down | Select the first visible child and update the chat pane; do nothing at a leaf |
| Arrow Left | Select the previous sibling and update the chat pane; stop at the first sibling |
| Arrow Right | Select the next sibling and update the chat pane; stop at the last sibling |
| Home / End | Select the first or last visible node and update the chat pane |
| Enter | Move focus from the selected graph node into its open chat pane |
| Space | Move focus from the selected graph node into its open chat pane |
| Shift+F10 or Menu | Open the focused node's action menu |
| Delete or Backspace | Open deletion confirmation for the focused node |
+ / - | Zoom in or out |
0 | Fit the visible graph |
| F | Fit the active branch |
| Ctrl+K or Command+K | Search conversations |
? | Open graph shortcut help |
| Escape | Close the active graph dialog or menu |
Except for the global graph-focus shortcut, these commands do not take over while focus is in a text input, editable field, dialog, or unrelated menu. Alt+G or Option+G also remains inactive while a modal dialog is open. Graph nodes expose their level, sibling position, selected state, and collapsed or expanded state to assistive technology. Status announcements report collapse counts, restored views, search reveals, deletion, and undo.
Menus and dialogs#
Buttons expose accessible names and pressed, expanded, selected, or disabled state where applicable. Escape closes menus and dialogs. Confirmation, search, shortcut-help, and preview dialogs move focus to a useful control, trap focus while open, and restore focus to the initiating control when closed. The graph's standalone ? shortcut-help button is anchored in the bottom-right corner of the graph pane.
Use Tab and Shift+Tab to move between standard controls. Node menus support Arrow keys, Home, End, Enter, Space, and Escape. Visible focus treatment marks the active control.
Screen size and motion#
The workspace switches to separate mobile Chat and Graph views on narrow screens. Touch targets, dialog sizing, overflow containment, and 16-pixel mobile inputs reduce accidental zoom and clipping. Documentation and graph viewport controls honor reduced-motion preferences. Search and collapse indicators do not rely on color alone.
