Graph & branches

Ask about selected text

Turn a passage in an answer into a focused follow-up branch.

Use Ask about this to turn a specific passage in an assistant answer into a focused follow-up. The resulting request is anchored behind that answer, so the branch keeps the path that produced the passage.

Ask about a passage#

  1. Open the path containing the assistant answer.
  2. Select the exact text you want to discuss.
  3. Choose Ask about this from the selection menu.
  4. Add your instruction in the floating composer.
  5. Send the question.

Selecting text in an answer to reveal the Ask about this action

The Ask about this composer opened for the selected passage

The selected passage is carried into the follow-up affordance so you do not need to copy and paste it manually. The request grows from the answer that contains the selection.

Write a focused instruction#

The selection supplies the subject, but the model still needs a task. Useful additions include:

  • “Explain this in plain language.”
  • “What evidence supports this claim?”
  • “Rewrite this for an executive audience.”
  • “Identify the hidden assumption.”
  • “Show a concrete example.”

Selection boundaries#

The action is intended for assistant text in the rendered response. Selecting controls, file metadata, or content outside the message does not create the same anchored prompt. Very long selections can also produce an unnecessarily broad request; choose the smallest passage that preserves the question.

How it differs from copying#

Copying a passage into the main composer can work, but the branch attaches wherever the graph is currently selected. Ask about this associates the follow-up with the answer you selected, reducing the risk of sending from the wrong node.

After sending, the new result can remain in the background like an inline Send behind request. Select its graph node when you are ready to inspect or continue it.
