Send behind
Grow a branch in the background while keeping the current node open.
Send behind grows the graph without moving the chat pane to the new result. It is useful when you want another answer to run while you keep reading, writing, or working on the current node.
Use the main composer#
- Select the graph node that should be the parent.
- Enter a prompt in the composer.
- Choose Send behind instead of Send.
The request uses the selected path, but the current view stays put. When the response completes, its node is available in the graph and may receive an unread indicator.
The desktop shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+Enter. On mobile, open the send-mode menu and choose Send behind.

Use the inline send-behind control#
Assistant messages expose a small send-behind action. Select it to open a floating composer anchored to that answer, enter the follow-up, and send. This is the safest way to target a specific older answer in a long visible path because the parent is explicit.
Inline send behind is not shown for a pending answer or a context-only message.
When it is most useful#
- launch several scenario checks from the same answer;
- request a shorter, more technical, or more skeptical version in the background;
- keep taking notes on one branch while another provider responds;
- add a research sub-question without losing your reading position.
What does not change#
Send behind does not merge answers, make the background result part of the active path, or change the selected node. To continue from the result, select its node after it appears.
The action is disabled while Load context is active, while a file clarification is waiting, or when messaging is unavailable because of access or usage state.
Send all versus Send behind#
Send all is a comparison action: it sends one prompt behind the selected point to the available major provider routes and creates sibling responses. Send behind creates one response using the current Auto, provider, or model selection.
