Synthesize graph nodes
Select text branches and combine their shared context into one multi-parent response.
Use Synthesize to combine several points in a conversation graph into one new response. Synthesis is available to eligible Trial, Pro, Max, and administrative accounts; it is not available on Core.
Select source nodes#
Open synthesis selection mode from the graph controls. The selection bar appears at the bottom of the graph, and a temporary checkbox appears on every graph node. Ordinary text responses, stored text-context nodes, and earlier text synthesis nodes can be selected. Image, file, artifact, pending, failed, and other unsupported nodes remain available for inspection but cannot be checked.
A normal click still opens that node in the chat pane. Use this to read a branch before deciding whether to include it. Checking the node's box selects it without changing the open chat. On desktop, double-clicking the node is a selection shortcut. Checkboxes disappear when selection mode ends.
Choose at least two nodes. There is no selection-count limit, and the order in which you check nodes does not affect the result.
Use the instruction box at the top of the selection panel to describe the result you want—for example, ask for a decision memo, a comparison, or a consolidated implementation plan. It starts with Synthesize these conversations. You can replace that text, but the instructions cannot be blank. The selected-node count and actions appear beneath the box.

Choosing Synthesize immediately closes selection mode, removes the checkboxes and selection bar, and returns the graph to normal navigation. The source nodes remain fully opaque and visually unchanged while the pending synthesis node is translucent. You can open any other node, inspect its chat path, use graph menus, and continue working normally. The pending response appears in chat only while its pending node is selected. If you move elsewhere, completion leaves your newer selection in place; select the finished synthesis node whenever you are ready to read it. While the pending node is open, use Stop in the chat pane to cancel, just as for an ordinary streaming response. The graph synthesis control does not become a cancel action.
You can start another synthesis while one or more syntheses are still running, even with the same source nodes. Each pending result runs independently. Stop affects only the pending synthesis currently open in the chat pane; other synthesis streams continue normally.
What context is synthesized#
Each selected node is an endpoint. Convography includes the complete stored text on the path from that branch's root through the endpoint. It does not include children below the endpoint, sibling branches, file or image payloads, or unrelated nodes.
When selected branches share earlier nodes, the shared history is included once. The application sends one canonical JSON conversation graph containing the selected endpoint ids, complete root-to-endpoint paths, longest shared prefix, and a deduplicated root-first node list. It does not truncate, chunk, or pre-summarize the stored text. Your fusion instructions accompany that graph as a separate top-level field; text inside graph nodes is treated as conversation data, not as synthesis instructions.
Context nodes containing stored text are valid endpoints. The original file or image that may have produced context text is not sent as a synthesis input in this release.
Read the result#
The synthesized response appears as one assistant-only graph node. One incoming edge connects every explicitly selected endpoint to the result. The result is placed below all of those endpoints and centered across them.
Opening the synthesis node shows the streamed plain-text assistant response. It does not add a fabricated user prompt, replay the source branches, or show a hidden structured-result panel. The response follows the fusion instructions while retaining material facts, decisions, constraints, reasoning, disagreements, uncertainty, and distinct deliverables from every selected path.
Send a normal follow-up from the synthesis node to begin a new linear branch whose first context item is the concise synthesized response.
If synthesis fails, your selected nodes and fusion instructions return so you can retry. Cancelling selection or completing synthesis resets the instructions to the default. No partial synthesis node is saved. A provider may reject unusually large complete context; Convography reports that failure rather than silently removing source material.
Send All and Synthesize#
Choose Send All and Synthesize from the composer when you want OpenAI, Gemini, Claude, and Grok to answer the same request before Convography combines the completed responses. The four provider nodes and pending synthesis node appear immediately. The progress strip reports each provider lane separately while the graph remains available for navigation.

Fusion starts after every provider lane becomes terminal and at least two responses completed. Stopping a provider node omits only that lane; stopping the pending synthesis node cancels the complete compound workflow. Read Compare providers for routing, web-search, partial-failure, and cancellation details.
Share or export a synthesis#
Shared links and response exports keep their existing behavior in this release. They can include the synthesized response, but they do not expose its private source branches or recreate its multi-parent topology.
