Split a conversation

Copy a selected path into a new independent conversation.

Split conversation copies the path ending at a selected node into a new independent conversation. Use it when a branch has become its own project rather than another alternative inside the same graph.

Create the split#

  1. Select the final node you want included.
  2. Open the node menu.
  3. Choose Split conversation.
  4. Convography creates a new conversation, switches to it, and selects the copied endpoint.

The new conversation appears in the conversation pane with its own identity and title. Only the ancestor path leading to the selected node is copied; unrelated sibling branches are not included.

What becomes independent#

After the split:

  • new messages in the copy do not appear in the original;
  • deletion in one conversation does not delete the other;
  • each conversation can be renamed separately;
  • each conversation has separate sharing links;
  • the copied path remains available even if the source branch is later removed.

Split versus share a branch#

Split when you need a separate editable workspace. Share a branch when someone else needs a read-only view of one path. A signed-in viewer may create their own branch copy from a share when that share permits it, but that action creates work in the viewer’s account.

Split versus create a branch#

Keep alternatives in one graph while they benefit from side-by-side visual comparison. Split when the graph’s topic, audience, owner, or lifecycle has diverged enough that separate organization is clearer.

Naming the new conversation#

The application derives a safe title from the copied work. Rename it from the conversation pane if the new purpose is more specific. A good split title names the outcome, such as “Launch brief — enterprise audience,” rather than the mechanical action “Copy of branch.”

Split is a copy operation, not a live link or merge. Convography does not automatically synchronize or reconcile later edits between the two conversations.
