Use Auto mode
Let Convography choose a model, reasoning level, and supported tool for each prompt.
Auto mode keeps model, reasoning, and hosted-tool controls out of the workspace. Convography analyzes the task and chooses an allowed route for the prompt.
What Auto chooses#
Depending on the prompt and currently available catalog, Auto can choose:
- a provider and concrete model;
- a reasoning effort appropriate to the task;
- web search for questions that need current public information;
- a lower-cost route for simple classification, extraction, or summarization;
- a stronger route for complex research, mathematics, or system design.
The server owns the final policy. Auto never grants access to a disabled model or bypasses the account’s plan, usage limit, provider availability, or tool restrictions.

Use Auto effectively#
Describe the task, source material, and freshness requirement explicitly. Compare:
Summarize the following paragraph in three bullets: …
with:
Research the current regulatory status of this proposal and cite public sources.
The first supplies text and asks for a bounded transformation. The second explicitly needs current research. Clear framing helps Auto distinguish source words inside supplied content from instructions about the outside world.
See what Auto used#
Completed assistant messages show the actual model and, when available, reasoning effort and enabled hosted tools. This metadata remains attached after reload so you can understand how the answer was produced.
For a multi-provider comparison, use Send all rather than trying to ask Auto for four independent answers in one response.
Switch to Auto#
- Open Account settings.
- Choose Models & Providers.
- Select Auto under Usage mode.
- Return to the app.
The model picker, reasoning control, and Web toggle disappear from the composer. Existing messages keep their recorded generation metadata.
When to use Simple instead#
Choose Simple mode when the provider itself is part of the experiment, when you need a particular supported model family, or when you want to control reasoning and web search per message. Auto is better when the outcome matters more than the route.
